Heasun: Taken

The movie "Taken" was released in the theaters earlier this year. The movie received a lot of attention for dealing with the issue of human trafficking. In the movie, two girls travel to Europe by themselves and get caught by a group of human traffickers. The father of one girl, a former CIA agent, flies to Europe and brings her daughter back. Although the movie succeeded in gaining public's attention by graphic and sensational scenes, I think the movie is not well made in terms of letting the public know of the truth of human trafficking. Most, and maybe even all, of the girls who are human trafficked do not have parents who are former CIA agents who can come and save them. Most of them are vulnerable in these cituations. Some don't even have parents who care for them. Of course, because it is a movie, the major goal is to earn money and to achieve that, you have to make dramatic stories, appealing characters, or graphic scenes. However, when dealing with something as serious and on-going like human trafficking, I think one has the responsibility of presenting the "truth" what's really out there. Nevertheless, I'm not saying that the movie was a total failure of presenting the truth. It is true that it did a fairly good job of attracting the audience and educating them of the current cituations. I just think that it could have been less fictional and more real, but I guess being fictional is one of the characteristics of movies.
